The Role of Basketball Parents According to the Warriors' Aaron Miles and PCA's Ruben Nieves

05.26.2020

The Golden State Warriors Youth Academy and PCA teamed up with League Apps to host a webinar on the role of basketball parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinar was guided by Jeremy Goldberg, the President of League Apps and Jeff Addiego, the Senior Director of Youth Basketball for the Golden State Warriors. Questions were answered by Aaron Miles, assistant coach of the Golden State Warriors and Ruben Nieves, National Director of Training of PCA.

Strength in Numbers

The Golden State Warriors slogan is a great reminder – especially at a time like now – of the power of bringing people together.

The four main goals laid out at the start of the discussion were:

  1. Understand ways to help kids understand the right lessons from sport at this time
  2. What it means to be a great basketball parent
  3. The ways to think about drills and activities during quarantine
  4. How to use this pause to be better as families and basketball fans

Some key takeaways from the discussion included:

  • Parents should think about goals for their kids in sports, always have the goals in mind, and try hard to make their words and behavior match those values/goals.
  • Basketball gives the opportunity to travel, chance to be part of a team, and brings people together.
  • The role of a basketball parent is to support without smothering, reinforce the life lessons that the coach is trying to instill and have empowering conversations with the children.
  • Uplift each other.
  • Parents will have to adjust their conversations if they are unable to attend games, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
  • Combine school lessons with sports lessons to mix it up.
  • Play with your kids and make it fun!
