Student Athlete Profile

Caitlin McClugage is a swimmer for Gaither High School. She sees how important teammates are even in an individual event sport.“When you watch the Olympics or college competitions on television, you will see the swimmers hug, shake hands, or something similar after the race with other swimmers, even when they are still breathing hard from the race. For those who lost to the other, it is not easy to be the bigger person when they may be so incredibly disappointed at that time. You will also see them talk to each other before the race when their main focus is to win the race. This is something I also do at each meet.”

Caitlin’s teammate notices her sportsmanship in every circumstance at a competition. “Caitlin is a really respectful person, especially to her coaches, teammates, competitors, and officials. At swim meets, Caitlin makes the energy of the meet bright. She always talks to her teammates. She is respectful and calm even if she has a bad race. Most people take out there disappointment or anger on their competitors and teammates by acting rude and moody but Caitlin is able to cover that up and understand the fact that she had a bad race and aim for a better race next time which is good because it shows that she is respecting what just happened and the other swimmers. Caitlin always says “good luck” and “good job” to her competitors and teammates.”

But over time, a relentless commitment to making your team better will benefit you. It will make others want you on their team. It will give you the opportunities not available to most people.”
