Matt Spellman

Director of Athletics and Activities, Bay Village City Schools

Matt Spellman has been the Director of Athletics and Activities for the Bay Village City Schools for the past 9 years. Prior to working at Bay, he was the Athletic Director for the Vermilion Local Schools (2008-10). He taught mathematics and coached football at Perry (2006-08), was Athletic Director for the Chardon Local Schools (2005-2006), and taught mathematics and coached football, boys basketball, and girls basketball at Wickliffe High School (1998-2005). Prior to moving back to Ohio to be closer to his family, he taught mathematics and coached football and track for Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. Matt has a total of 23 years in education.

Matt earned his B.S. in Mathematics and teaching certification at Baldwin-Wallace College where he also played football for the Yellow Jackets. He earned his M.A. in Sports Management from Cleveland State University. He also earned his Education Administration License from Ursuline College.

Matt has been involved in athletics for most of his life as a player, coach, and now as an athletic and activities director. He was a three-sport athlete at Pymatuning Valley High School. He went on to play college football for one year at Edinboro University before finishing up his playing career at Baldwin-Wallace College.

For Matt’s first two years at Bay, the Bay Athletic Department received the prestigious Harold A. Meyer Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity from the Ohio High School Athletic Association. For the past nine years, he has coordinated the West Shore Conference and the Great Lakes Conference Sportsmanship Day. Matt coordinated the West Shore Conference (5 years) and Great Lakes Conference (4 years) Cross Country Championships, the West Shore Conference Wrestling Championship (1 year), and the Great Lakes Conference Swimming and Diving Championships (3 years). Matt coordinated numerous O.H.S.A.A. State Soccer Playoff games including State Semi-final Girls Soccer games and the O.H.S.A.A. Sectional Wrestling Tournament. For the past five years, Bay Athletics has been a proud partner with the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Under Matt’s leadership, Bay’s Boys Soccer Team competed five years in the Final Four, earning State Runner-up three times. Girls Cross Country and Girls Soccer earned State Runner-up. Boys Basketball made it to the Final Four, and the Football Team qualified for the State Playoffs for the past five years. In addition, Bay’s Athletic Department has sent numerous individuals to the State Meet for cross country, swimming and diving, and track.

Matt and his wife, Heather, currently reside in Bay Village and have four children, Brendan (13), Connor (11), Dylan (9), and Anna (7).
